My Research Proposal

A. Background of the Study

A test, in plains words, is a method of measuring a person’s ability or knowledge in a given domain. (Brown, 2000: 394). For measuring student’s ability or knowledge in a given domain is done through two kinds of examination in our country. They are called National Examination (UN) and Local Examination (US). Talking about National Examination (UN), it is an alluring topic to discus, from students’ preparation with the varieties of tutorial, parent’s supporting for their children even the kinds of schools’ Try out of National Examination (UN).
National Examination (UN) is national final examination, it has only six subjects for testing, they are Bahasa Indonesia, Math, English, chemistry, biology and physics for Science and then Bahasa Indonesia, Math, English, geography, sociology and economic for social science in Senior secondary school level. The test enrollment is ruled according to the Operating Standard Procedure (POS). It says that National Examination’s subject to examine based on each majors. Meanwhile Local Examination is the test that administered by school and supervised by the local government and the subjects to be tested are selected by the individual school. Thereby, we can say that students have to take two kinds of examination; they are National Examination (UN) and Local Examination (US).
Mulyasa (2004) states that there are certain people expect the National Examination (UN) should not be carried out because it is used as one single criterion to determine whether students pass or fail regardless the long process of learning they had done before. In addition, some other experts said that the result of National Examination (UN) is not representing the quality of academic/non academic of students. Many students are in the high achievement, they do not pass of the National Examination (UN), whereas several students are in the low achievement, they get high score in National Examination.
Regarding with the issues above, this study aims at describing the results of National Examination (UN) in Malinau regency. Based on Malinau regency official’s website, Malinau is one of the administrative area in Indonesia of East Borneo, it is located 114°35'22 – 116°50'55 Length-East and 1°21'36 – 4°10'55 Width-North, it has 42.620,70 km² and Malinau is in the north of East Borneo. Malinau is one of regency in East Borneo province. Malinau is also called as Bumi Tenguyun. Malinau consist 12 sub-district, they are Bahau Hulu, Kayan Selatan, Kayan Hilir, Kayan Hulu, Malinau, Malinau Barat, Malinau Selatan, Malinau Utara, Mentarang, Mentarang Hulu, Pujungan, Sungai Boh, and 106 lowest local government. From astronomic and geographic point of view above, Malinau has very large area and the location is too far from central government so probably Malainau’s access of information is limited and the location of school make the difficulty to manage but the fact the result of National Examination is satisfy so this study would like to know the phenomena. It supported by the information on Kaltimpost Friday, 19 June 2009 (09:50) the numbers of student participants of National Examination (UN) 2008/2009 are 557 students, 14 students do not pass of UN. They are student of SMAN 2 Malinau for social science students the numbers is 1 student, SMA Kelempun Kimet Pujungan for social science students the numbers are 4 students and 9 students are the students of SMA Eben Haezer for social science students. The result of National examination (UN) announced on Monday, 22 June 2010 for all subject. It was said by Elia Use; she is the chief of Dinas Pendidikan, Pemuda dan Olahraga (Disdikpora) of Malinau. The percentage of Malianau’s National Examination (UN) graduate of senior secondary school is good enough. It goes to 97, 48 percent from 557 students, they spread out in 9 schools. It means only 14 students spread out in 12 sub-district have to repeat of National Examination (UN) on 17 Mei 2010.
From explanation above, this study would like to take a picture of the profile of English examination result of the senior secondary school students in Malinau by considering level, achievement, gender and year. Level in this study means level of examination’ they are National Examination and Local examination, achievement in this study means the students’ English examination results in National Examination (UN) and Local Examination. This study would like to describe the differences of 25% of students’ are in the high achievement and 25% of students’ are in low achievement based on Local examination level (US) versus their result of English National examination into statistic meanwhile 50 % the other students are homogenous in assumption. Gender in this study means there are two kinds of students’ sex: male and female. Year of examination in this research means for 5 years, where National Examination (UN) have done in Malinau especially in senior Secondary School.
To these reasons, the writers believe that by considering examination levels, achievement, gender and year of examination there be any difference in the English examination results of the senior secondary school students in Malinau.


B. Problem Statements of the Study

In line with the background of the study above, this research focused on English examination results of senior secondary school students in Malinau. The major research question is formulated to carry out the study. The research question is what the profile of English examination results of the Senior Secondary school students in Malinau.
From this general research problem of the study, more specific problems are formulated as follow:

1. What is the profile of English examination results of the senior secondary school students in Malinau given the examination levels, achievement, gender, and year of examination?

2. Could there be any difference in the English Examination Result of the senior secondary school students in Malinau by considering examination levels, achievement, gender, and year of examination?

C. The Objectives of the Study
The objectives of the study are dealing with the problems above:

1. To know the profile of English examination results of the senior secondary school students in Malinau given the examination levels, achievement, gender, and year of examination.
2. To analyze the difference in the English Examination Result of the senior secondary school students in Malinau by considering examination levels, achievement, gender, and year of examination.

D. Hypothesis

H0 : There is no significant different in English examination results of the senior secondary school students in Malinau by considering achievement, gender, and year of examination.

Ha : There is significant different in English examination results of the senior secondary school students in Malinau by considering achievement, gender, and year of examination.

E. The Significances of the Study
The results of the study are expected to give some contributions:

1. To give information about the profile of English examination results of the senior secondary school students in Malinau.

2. To give information the difference in the English Examination Results of the senior secondary school students in Malinau by considering examination levels, achievement, gender, and year of examination.

F. Scope and Limitation of the Study
This study will limit of the scope by trying to:

1. Describes the profile of English examination results of the senior secondary school students in Malinau.

2. Find out the differences in the English Examination Result of the senior secondary school students in Malinau by considering examination levels, achievement, gender, and year of examination.

G. Operational Definition of Key Terms

1. The profile of English examination results is a graph, table, or list of scores representing the extent to which exhibits various tested characteristics or tendencies of the result of English examination (National Examination and Local Examination) at senior secondary school students.

2. Levels are kinds of examination in term institutions involved in administering the examination i.e.: National Examination which is administered and supervised by the central government and Local examination which is at ministered by every school unit and supervised by the local government.

3. Achievement is the act of student achieves on English examination results is students’ high achievers versus low achievers.

4. Gender is sex the state of the students, they are male or female.

5. Year of examination is the period time of the examination is done. There are five years: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

6. The difference in the English Examination Result is the amount by which one quantity of the English Examination Result school students in Malinau is greater or less than another.
